Writing Workshop – Blackout Poetry

Agenda

Introduction:

  • Introduce myself, what we’ll be doing, and what I expect the outcome to be

Prompt:

  • Go over what the exercise of the day will be (+definition)

  • Share an example

Write:

  • Allow a few minutes to brainstorm

  • Take about fifteen minutes to create a poem

Closing:

  • Share finished pieces in comments

  • Go over when the next exercise will be

Notes

Definition: Blackout poetry is when you take a written piece of text from a book/magazine/newspaper and redact words in order to come up with your own poem

Examples: @blackoutpoet, @cgcpoems, @courtneyphilipsstorytelling

Getting Started:

  1. Grab what you need i.e. pen, pencils, book page, newspaper

  2. Take about fifteen minutes to work out your poem

  3. Clean it up a bit i.e. write it on another paper, or leave as is

  4. Share it in the comments or tag me on Instagram
